April 9

We hope everyone had a most excellent spring BREAK!  It was nice to see all those tanned, smiling faces this morning.  Word on the street is that we have nine days until TCAP.  There are a few new skills still left to be taught, but we are also going to be placing emphasis on reviewing all of those concepts from waaaaay back in August.  Since this is the Super Bowl, World Series, National Championship of 5th grade education, we are going to be getting our practice on.  We have some exciting ways to review.  Thank you for your support at home!

Math:
  • PB p. 276  odds only (p. 275 for those who know that they are supposed to do that page instead)
  • We will have a Topic 18 test on Friday.  Skills covered are:
    • categorical and numerical data
    • Graphs
      • bar graphs
      • picture graphs
      • line graphs
      • circle graphs
    • Mean (average), median (middle number in a set of data), mode (number occurring MOST often in a set of data), and range (difference between the greatest number and smallest number in a set of data)
    • Measures of Central Tendency and Outliers (outliers throw off the mean and range of a set of data)
Science:
  • Practice Book p. 220-227 (this was assigned the Friday before Spring Break to be completed in class.  Most should have it already completed.)
  • We started discussing "Work" and simple machines today.  Ask your student what type of simple machine this is and to name its parts:
Reading: Google TCAP practice to find some good websites to prepare for the assessment.

Social Studies:  Google TCAP practice.

Reminders:
  • Pictures and/or money is due TOMORROW!
  • We are in desperate need of #2 YELLOW WOODEN PENCILS for TCAP.  It is hard to believe that we have gone through all of those pencils from the beginning of the year.  Thank you for any donations!
  •  Please look under beds and in closets for any misplaced textbooks and blue calculators.  These things have grown legs and gone missing.  ;-)
